1939 Register

Census returns are invaluable tools, to amateur and professional genealogists alike. The drawback is that details of individuals in the return cannot be released until 100 years after the census is taken.

The 1911 census was released a couple of years early but the powers that be have indicated that this concession will not be repeated for the 1921 census, and so we will have to wait another 6 years to see it.

However, in 1939 the governement conducted a register of the civilian population and, because it was not a census, the 100 years restriction does not apply. Find My Past have been scanning and digitising the 7,000 volumes of the 1939 Register for the last year and will make it available later this year. We will keep you posted.

Who Do You Think You Are?

The new series starts tonight, Thursday 13 August, at 9pm. The line up of subjects looks more  interesting than of late and the series starts with Paul Hollywood of 'Bake Off' fame. Among subsequent guests are Sir Derek Jacobi, Gareth Malone and Jerry Hall. It is to be hoped that this series will give a more complete picture of each subject's ancestry rather than concentrate exclusively on one strand which is deemed to be box office. I fear this hope will prove to be in vain.
